After pencil grid lapping on paper I checked with a square and the hone was not flat. I think the paper either messes up the outside honing area, or prematurely erases pencil marks in those areas. Either way I'm no longer as happy with the flatness I'm getting with sandpaper and I think it's from curling and bulging. I'm now relying on my Norton plate more and more for flattening any type of hone.
