Thread: Should I have this Coticule bout cut?

Basil that is not BBW showing through, see my above post. It's a characteristic of the vein.

Even if it only lasts 5 years..for $105, Im more worried about, size and dimension because I'm new, and don't want to ruin my razors..if you guys think the size and shape will safely work for me being new at this, that's good for me. Jarrod seemed very kind and helpful, I doubt he would've sold me a bum coticule.

As soon as I get the stone ill take pics. He took the originals down after he sold it to me., I know the layers weren't as thick and straight as some of the other stones., but again, I don't see why he would sell me a bad stone after going back and fourth with me on the phone and emails trying to find something right for me. BBW stands for Belgian Blue Whetstone. They are usually slower and coarser than Coticules. Coticule veins go through BBW so some Coticule whetstones are naturally bonded with BBW, others are backed by slate. Vintage Coticules were backed by BBW. In Coticules you can sometimes see lines and/or spots which are harmless manganese inclusions iirc.

Without side pictures it's mere speculating but it could be a thin BBW layer within a Coticule layer. It wouldn't be a whole lot better though.

Where can we find more info about this so called blushing?

Found the side picture, I didn't realize I downloaded out. So what's the verdict here? Even if its bad, its well worth out, because, if I got a stone that didn't raise questions, I wouldn't have learned all that I've learned on this thread, and I'd think all coticules were the same aside from shape..Thanks Again!

I've only tried one BBW (£19 for 150mm x 40mm) but I've got edges that rival the coticule for softness and keenness, I still see a 4000 grit rating quoted sometimes on some sites but, I think thats inaccurate.

To me it looks like a Coticule natural bonded with BBW at both sides and backed with slate. You can't just lap away the BBW layer at the surface because you will reach the bottom layer in no time. IMHO this stone is no good for a beginner because you should only use the yellow part. I personally wouldn't have even bought this at half price.

Unless I'm wrong and what is showing is not BBW I would advice to return and exchange it for a regular size selected Coticule (bout) with no BBW showing at all. The thicker the Coticule layer the better.

I'm not exactly sure where I saw that at, but I know I did, because I researched it before I bought the above slurry stone. Basil send email Jarrod when you get time and ask him what it is, I am curious if I was just seeing things now.
