Thread: Naniwa 3000/10000 or Thuringian + Arkansas?

Naniwa Super Stone 3000 / 10000 grit combi | EdenWebshops.co.uk is where I found it. It's just as expensive as the regular 10k but it has the second side. So you're saying that the jump of grit would not be too large then?

I am new to this meaning I've only been honing my own razors a couple of years I'm just starting to get the hang of it to the point that I'm competent. My advice comes from scouring these forms for the last few years and from Lynn. The norton 4/8k and a naniwa 12k is all you will ever need to have without getting into restoring work.

There is a world of options out there. But but take it from a simpleton like myself this is all you really need it from my experience and it requires the least amount of money invested to enjoy a lifetime of straight shaving.

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm having slight issues finding the norton here in the UK, but I will definitely keep looking. Also I'm doing this research quite a bit earlier than my actual purchase as I've just started using straight and I want to improve my technique first before I go out and do anything fancy.

I do have any links to a shop over there that carry them but I know Lynn and Don does at SRD...

When your talking the same grit, like 8k, in the finishing range, it's personal preference. Thuringian, (which are normally a bit higher than 8k) Coticule, or Naniwa. Arkansas stones are in a class by themselves. They're not rated like most hones.

1k stones are for bevel setting, 4k are for sharpening, and 8k and above are your finishers. Shave ready blades can be maintained indefinitley with a bit of skill and a barber's hone, or something in the 10-12k range. I'm surprised Glen didn't link to his post. It should help you guys out a bit:

I also don't recommend naturals to guys just learning how to hone. Stick with the synthetics. Your results, (when they come) will be more consistent.
