Thanked: 247I'll just register the opinion that I could never have an affair with a coticule. Every one I ever met wanted a full on relationship...

They're just hones, they remove steel and most can get you a shaveable edge. Nothing hard about using them either, it's just a bit trickier than cheaper alternatives like the norton, because with a coticule you have to make slurry, then dilute it at a rate that you have to figure out.
I hardly ever use mine anymore, but the other week I did use one of them since I overhoned the razor on the fast synthetics and thought for fun I'd do the rehoning on a coticule.

Thanked: 22Yeah...I know I'm funny about some things. For example, I have particularly wide feet (4E) and so the only way I can byt footwear is by mail order. So a few years back I tried this NewBalance walking shoe for about $100. It was like a dream. So I told my father-in-law how much I loved those shoes and he as well has huge feet and extra wide 4Es too. And his advice was if you love them buy a couple pair because sure as heck they're going to stop making them. So I ordered three (3) pairs and could you believe it, they really stopped making them! I'm down to my last pair of those shoes but I made sure that I will be leaving behind at least one coticule-combo to my son, thus my purchase of the two. In fact, I even bought a BBW for good measure. Because, you can mark my words, if it's good and it works, some fool will stop making it,

They dig them from the ground, so it's not like they'll stop making them. It's more like they may get even more expensive then they are already.
Over a three year period, as soon as a bunch of straight shaving people created a cult-like following, complete with new names, magic properties, martyr myths, and what not, the prices of the same stones were increased threefold. I guess that's what the market would bear, but to me it's interesting at which point the bubble bursts and the price increases stop. The only similar thing, though to a smaller degree, is for the larger sized Eschers with special colors - another area where hype rules over reality.
I could live with one finisher 1"x5" high quality thuringian and maintain one razor indefinitely with just 15-20 strokes every few months - the exact same as my first 'honing' experience. That one razor, hone, strop, and brush, if not abused should be good for my grandchildren. The wear and tear with correct use is so minimal. Everything else is excess, just because we have plenty of time for a hobby and enough disposable income to afford it.

Thanked: 22gugi - I guess all things considered we don't live in all that bad of times. Though tonight after dinner, my step-son tossed out a half piece of $8.99lb. steak which, I had to force him to retrieve it for the dog. And in case you're wondering, he will be hung at sunrise!

Thanked: 247Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. That goes for steak AND coticules.

Your son will wind up with both coticules anyway, you may as well borrow his now.

Thanked: 22mjsorkin...I know, I know, it's just so dang purty - I just want to look at it. And JimmyHAD, 11 coticules? amd 4 eschers??? How on earth can you even afford steak? I've got a funny story somewhat related. My uncle was in the retail gun business for close to twenty years. Well, he made a heck of a living buying and selling used guns, some of which were such good buys that he kept them for himself. Well, finally about seven years ago he sells his house and invites me over for a drink and to say goodbye as he was moving to FL. Well, he walks me up to a an old crawl space and in the deepest recesses of this house there was basically an overflowing arsenal that would've made some of our enemies envious. He was asking me there to give me some guns because if his wife knew how many he bought she would've killed him!
