Thanked: 22An affair w/ a coticule
After honing with a number of [ancient] no-name hones and using an American Hone Co.( Barber's Hone), I finally purchased a coticule combo stone. At first, I was a little reluctant, after hearing stories about the difficulty in using them. However, being my experience honing knives as a commercial fisherman and as an amateur butcher, I was worried for no reason. It's a dream! In fact, after buying it last week and it being delivered about five days ago, I bought another one for my son (who's nine years old as of this writing), in the event that some day they may be forever unavailable, which, according to the seers, is an inevitability. In any event, the coticule is worth every cent.
Caveat: I have no pecuniary interest in coticules or any other honing stones.

I like them too, though I like my Eschers more. Coticules will always be available, people die and estate sales go to the bay. Enjoy the coticule, there is something cool about honing a razor on a stone our forefathers used way back when.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm with Jimmy on this one. The coticule does a good job however the Escher does a better one. The difference is remarkable.

Check out the known vendors, ebay and of course the classifieds. It does vary according to size, natural combo or slate backed. Many variables. A rectangular stone is more costly than a bout (odd shape) and a select is more than a standard ..... or whatever they call it.

I use a 150mm by 35mm standard bout and its great, what I've found after nearly two years of honing on this one stone is any bad edges are 99% of the time down to either not setting the bevel properly or my bad technique. cost £65 from steve at invisible edge.
But I also love my jnat which was £85 incl. slurry stone from Maxim at JNS and its great as well. the bargains are there if you look for them, not to mention my BBW which was £19 which has to be the best for value.
yet to try an escher, I've heard too many differing views on its edges, if they are discernibly better than a coticule or jnat and I'm done with buying stones, cant afford it anymore

Coticules sure are great. They may eventually stop being mined, but they will always be available online.
