Thanked: 114I love my new Chosera 1K!
I have a Henry Sears razor that I struggled to get a good bevel on. No matter what I tried, my microscope showed microchipping and the bevel would not set. I thought it was due to inferior steel. But switching from the Norton 1K to my recently purchased Chosera 1K, the bevel dialed right in. Loving it!
Am I experiencing cognitive dissonance in support of my new purchase? I don’t think so – in my opinion, the Chosera produces a much cleaner edge than the Norton 1K.
Nothing new here, of course --- just sharing.Last edited by diyguy; 04-29-2012 at 02:48 PM.

Thanked: 993Agreed, the Chosera is a beautiful bevel setter. I find that it cuts quickly and leaves a gentle scratch pattern. I find the Norton cuts well, but the scratch pattern takes a bit more to remove at the sharpening stage.
What I really enjoy about the chosera is the use of different slurry mediums. I.e....i had lots of fun playing with the norton prep stone on in, the supplied 400 grit artificial nagura, and as recommended by Holli4....a coticule slurry stone. Coti slurry and chosera....super fast cutting and gentle.

I'll have to try that. Keep meaning to post that I received my Chosera after you helped me talk SWMBO into letting me pick it up. LOL I love it!
To the OP, if it is some type of dissonance support, then a lot of people are having the same issue!
And to Shooter, this may set off my HAD, but all the threads on the Escher and Thuringian stones are setting it off too. I think the Chosera HAD would be better off for me. As expensive in the long run, but less expensive in steps.

The Chosera 1k is my favorite bevel setter. I have a Western Style Japanese blade that needed work, It's a Stainless Steel Wedge, hard as diamonds. It had a few chips, a growing bevel, etc...pretty much a nightmare. The Chosera 1k made quick work of it. I did use the supplied rubbing stone. Once the bevel was set, I used my Norton 4/8, then went to my Escher Barber's Delight (Sorry Cove) Just for S**ts and Giggles, I did a few lapps on my Nakayama Asagi, I had an awesome shave yesterday. Used Razorock XXX.

Thanked: 993Start with the coti slurry, dilute to water. Just like using any slurry, for me anyway....always dilute to water.
Nothing wrong with w Norton 1k though....all things considered. As compared to a chosera, it lacks. As compared to a king, it excels. When coupled with a financial variable, it's the best bang for the buck.
I honestly would not own a chosera if I only honed my own razors. The norton would be more than enough.Last edited by Maxi; 04-29-2012 at 07:24 PM.
