Thanked: 2Norton 8K problems
I'm using the Norton stone to hone a razor. When I use the 8K side it feels like there is something that the razor is hitting, like particles of something. I cleaned the razor and the hone and don't feel anything. Was interested in knowing if anyone experienced this, because I can't figure out what the problem is.

Is this a stone/hone that you've used before?

Did you lap the stone first.? Some will need more than others.

My norton had that in the beginning.
After lapping it a couple of times, it was gone. I think it may have been dirt particles that got stuck on the surface.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I did after lapping on sandpaper. Some grit got in my 4k side. Exactly as you described. A friend cleaned it off by rubbing 4k & 1k together for a couple seconds.

Thanked: 993Agree with everything above. If I remember correctly, I took about 1/8" of the 8k side off of mine before it was soft and ready to go.

The norton needs more lapping than other stones at first to get it glassy smooth, keep lappin.

If it's not grit from lapping. It may be that you need to redo the edges of the hone. You may be hitting a spot on them as you move the razor and you're not perfectly flat with it.
Ps. for the price that Norton charges for a new hone it's Annoying that they can't have a better degree of flatness to it.Last edited by Johnus; 05-09-2012 at 11:42 AM.

If you were "arm hair" testing it before the 8k, you probably transfered little pieces of hair onto the surface, flush the surface and wipe the blade good. JMO
