I have them on my watch list as well. I am new to all of this, what does the Smiths Honing solution do?

Absolutely love my stones. I've tried them with both a slurry and just water. The purple stone and 'mystery' stone both give a great edge!!! I've finished a Boker King Cutter, a Red-point 917 and a JA Henckels #50 on these stones and all have produced a clean comfortable shave!!!

I think for $114 (that included shipping to Canada) I got a GREAT deal! I'd recommend these to any beginner! THe fact that the stones are 6 inches by 3 inches makes honing on them a breeze and are a fraction of the cost of any JNAT or Escher type finisher.

I've heard they work really well with oil but not sure how saturated the stones will become if oil is used. I've heard about some oil that won't penetrate the stone but don't know much more than that. Water or water and slurry is simple and a joy on these stones!

I've bought some really cool stones from AJ and have never been disappointed. I have even set a bevel with the dragon's tongue. They are fun to play with and if it wasn't for the shipping, would be a real bargain.

For you it would be a bargain. The freight would be much cheaper.

I bought the stone in this add from AJ on ebay but he used to offer it in a 4x8 inch and I cut it in half and cut a lsurry stone off the end of each. traded the 2nd stone and the guy loved it.

Rod already gave you the "Solution" pun intended

    Safe Oil

Smith's honing solution will give a stone the feel of Oil with out the risks, smell or clean up issues.. It is very cheap too (have never used it on Synthetic waterstones that might be bad)

I have used it on real Oilstones mostly like the Charnley's and Arkansas and it works great there, too

Just to be clear,, I seriously doubt the grit rating of these stones, not the honing ability of the stones, I own them and have used them quite well, in fact I like them, -BUT- the claiming of higher and higher grit rating is about deplorable..
