Smith's honing solution will give a stone the feel of Oil with out the risks, smell or clean up issues.. It is very cheap too (have never used it on Synthetic waterstones that might be bad)

I have used it on real Oilstones mostly like the Charnley's and Arkansas and it works great there, too

Just to be clear,, I seriously doubt the grit rating of these stones, not the honing ability of the stones, I own them and have used them quite well, in fact I like them, -BUT- the claiming of higher and higher grit rating is about deplorable..
Well I think someone should invest in an electron microscope and put this issue to rest. I do feel that the grit of the 'mystery' slate is at LEAST 12k based on the feel of the stoneand edge I'm getting from it. The shave is as good, imo better, than a synthetic 12k for MY face with MY honing technique.

Does anyone here have friends at the university of manchester?? They've apparently installed the world's most powerful microscope and I'm sure we could get an accurate reading from it

So your basically saying its fake? It's a piece of slate not a complicated watch! Good starter hone for beginners, maybe not to everyones taste.

Nobody is doubting that the hones work,,,

But the names are not proved accurate, they were just used ad hoc by the seller from other people's descriptions of what the stones resembled.. The grit ratings are a myth there is no way to test that other than a person's best guess..

Don't get hung up on names and ratings the hones either work, or don't, we know they work, but we also discuss minutea here, so inaccurate/un-proved information is often corrected so that it is not taken as fact...

We are not busting on the stones we are saying that the names and grit ratings are highly suspect and should not be accepted as fact...

ps: I just used my own Green WHIG last night with a final finish of Smith's for a sweet edge on a customer's Dovo

Just the guy selling them has got a pretty good reputation for sellin natural hones, not bought one yet cause I'm still not sure if I want to get it done properly or learn for myself, just on a tight budget.

I am not denying that those hones are great hones. My only issue is with misuse of well known name. That is why I use "Rolex" as an example.

I haven't been able to find the 'actual' hones with these names. Any way we can get a link or some photos to compare?
I agree with what you are saying if, in fact, they aren't what he is naming them. With that said, they provide an excellent edge as mentioned in this post as well as others and seem to have been put through pretty rigorous tests by members on here.

If I could buy a watch that was the exact same/better quality as a rolex and it was called a rolex but wasn't a rolex I wouldn't care about the name; I'd just be happy knowing I got a great deal on a quality item.

You might want to read through this thread

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...huringian.html

    and this thread

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/advan...ns-tongue.html

These are a ton of reading but it will give you an idea how the names and the grit rating have changed over less than one year if you actually read them

There are also some pics of the stones you seek, as you can see this is rather an old discussion on SRP where the hones are actual held in good regard, that isn't always the case on other forums..
