Looking through here, was there ever an answer as to what the "feather/fern"-looking structures are in lighter stones?

If I am not mistaken, its just fossilized plant material trapped in the sediment. Fern or other bits of leaves become part of the stone after a gazillion years and leave their mark.

Yes, They are there from the era that the stone was mud and now are incorporated into the stone. I do not remember the exact geologic period in which they were formed. They can be a good hone when the bits are removed from the vey surface. The tiny pits left are no problem during their use.

Some neat stones in this thread. Here's a combo I have, I couldn't see any remanence of a label on it. I got the rubbing stone separately.

I have found this two colored thury in the wild and try to hone on it - it is very smooth and fine . The previous ouner have badly dished the wellow - green side , so for me is left the 2 sm thick blue green side . Dimentions are a bit over 2 inch wide and over 6 inch long . It still have spot from the wellow side after lapping the back , unfortunately for me .

This is my natural combo yg/b 7x2 1/2. IMO not only are they beautiful but produce very nice edges! I have one more I need to take pictures of then I will post.

Nice rocks, fellas.
Here's mine. Found in the wilds, and recently discovered it was a combo, after some thorough cleaning.
Blue/ Green on one side, cloudy Gray, on the other.
Whatever is imbedded in the gray side, doesn't present any problems when honing.

Talking about naturals and "found in the wilds" does present a conundrum; in the wilds as in Peter would say if walked the area, or as in a shop/old warehouse/retired professional/place where its purpose was as a hone. I get it in most cases. Most cases
