Thanked: 3226Good idea on posting updates of your progress, that should be interesting. Rosewood is nice, I had a Browning Medalist 22 target pistol with rosewood grips and they looked super.

Thanked: 10Soooo a little bit of an issue! I got home from work and actually measured the Goodbehere razor just to make sure on the dimensions I originally punched into the excel spreadsheet that determines how many layers of tape to use. Well turns out I was way off! This is what the spread sheet tells me now that I've used the ACTUAL measurements
Thickness of spine Width of blade Angle without tape 1 layer 2 layers 3 layers 4 layers
Razor 1 9.53 19.05 29.0 29.9 30.8 31.8 32.7
SO what did I do wrong? I'm terrible with math so I won't be offended when one of you point out the fact that I didn't carry the decimal place correctly. The measured dimensions of the razor that I used are as follows: 6/16" thick = .375 inches = 9.53mm and the spine is 3/4 wide = .75 = 19.05mm.
What I'm seeing here is that the optimal bevel angle of 18 - 22 degrees is impossible given the dimensions of this razor? Advise greatly appreciated on this one. I'm hoping I just screwed up the conversions or made errors on my spreadsheet. If I didn't, now what?

Thanked: 3226No, your conversions seem to be on. I would remeasure the spine width and blade width to double check your measurements. You don't measure the spine width with any tape on it. The bare spine width measurement seems awfully wide to me. If it were down around 6 mm give or take a hair you would be off to the races with a 19mm blade width.

Thanked: 10You were bang on Bob! The spine width on the re-measure is actually 5.5mm. Once I get to my computer I will recheck the spreadsheet. Thanks for the help.

Jeez, I didn't know math was involved for honing wedges... I'm terrible at math! Better send out my wedges and pay to get them honed by a mathematician. :P

Thanked: 3226Yea, it may seem odd but I wish I had of seen the linked site and app before I tackled my first near wedge. I decided to wing it on that one with 1 layer of tape on a near wedge and was rewarded with a nice 1/4 inch wide bevel. After many retries by trial and error I finally got a narrow more normal looking bevel. You can still clearly see the remnants of the extra wide bevel from the first attempt. The second near wedge honed up just fine with a normal looking bevel using the number of layers of tape suggested by the app. That is not to say you won't get an uneven looking bevel if there is a problem with the spine in the first place, it just won't be god awful wide.

Thanked: 10Yup 1 layer of tape gives me an angle of 17.5 degrees and 2 layers brings me to 18.4. I will probably go for 1 layer as its one less piece I have to cut once the tape wears out.
Spent my evening building a light box last night so I could photograph some straights I have restored that I would like to sell so I didn't get a chance to work Ol' Wedgey last night but I've got the weekend to make some progress. If I get a chance I'll post some shots of the now rustless blade.

Thanked: 10They must make stronger tape where your from, as I find my tape wears after sliding it across a hone.
