Don't they sell dragon skin tape in Canada? Oh well, my tape wears out on the low grits (especially DMT 325 and Shapton 1000) but I can use it several times on the high grits and almost indefinitely on my coticule (before I sold it) and Japanese natural hone. Of course, that also has to do with the lesser pressure I use on the high grits.

So after honing a couple of wedges for the first time last night, I see what you guys mean about making sure to use the correct layers of tape... I will be mindful of this in the future!

Yea, honing a wedge/near wedge, especially the first one, can be a real eye opener if all you are used to is full hollows. It was to me in any event.

Almost forgot, hey driftwood how are you making out with yours?

Any tips for a new honer for wedges? I have two wedges that need to be honed soon. Especially honing wedges with curved toes...

Try looking up swooping X stroke, there may be some hints for dealing with curved toes. Not an expert so the suggestion to do a search and come to your own conclusions.

OK, I was thinking along the lines of this http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...-you-hone.html . I don't know if that is applicable for yours.

Woohoo! I actually figured out the swooping x-stroke on my own and was using it on a wedge I honed yesterday. It turned out okay, but was wondering if there was a better method. I will keep practicing the swopping x then!

If you like a small bevel as I do then you could end up using as many as three layers of tape, uneven bevels on older razors can drive certain people like myself to the edge of insanity. and one of the reasons I love full hollow ground razors, you just gotta love those beautiful even little bevels.

If the razor is ground funny and the spine is wonky as a consequence, I don't think tape will make much of a difference as far as uneven/wavy bevels go. You are still following the spines profile with or without tape. Yea, uneven bevels used to drive me nuts too but I have made peace with that so long as they shave well.

I definitely prefer a small and even bevel, so that's why I'm asking now before I touch these two big wedges I want to throw in the rotation.

This is my fear, the spine being uneven leading to an uneven bevel...

I am guessing most spines vary in width across their length a bit but no idea how much of a variance would cause an uneven bevel. How to fix that is good for another search. Then there is dealing warped tangs/spines/blades to add to the possible fun. It is enough to put a poor boy off honing.
