I think you have gone past where you want to on the 12k. Typically if I use the naniwa ss 12k its around 7-12 x-strokes.

I would drop back to the 8k until its popping hairs above skin level. And until you have the 8k edges shaving well just keep the 12k to the side.

I learned the hard way with too many hones to know what I was really doing. Then I started only using the 1k 5k and 8k and left the 10 and 12k sit. I now know what to look for off of the 8k and understand when to move on. Now I've been using exclusively natural finishers (coti and thuri).

Steven, I have the feeling you're trying to hard to get to that sharp, smooth, brilliant edge. Take a step back and follow meleii's advice of learning to get good shaves off of the 8K. I would say 10 x-strokes on the 8K or a 4K/8K pyramid from 5 strokes (5/5, 3/3, 1/3, 1/5 on 4K/8K).

Go easy on your face, maybe also take a step back there? If you doubt your own technique, I suggest you do only WTG shaves until your skin feels good afterwards and then get the XTG/ATG passes.

i tried i just cant get it popping hairs im going to try side honing see if its more natural i have a question im looking at this vid:

Sharpening Torray bevel set - YouTube

and the guy actually rests the tang of the razor on the hone is this because there is no shoulder on that razor?
i was told to avoid doing this because it catches the shoulder.

It's not about popping arm hairs, it's about the shave, never forget As for the video, I never put the tang on the hone, simply because my razors cannot do that without flipping or changing the angle or bevel contact or whatever.

Two hours of work on the 1K is just wrong, that's not going to help you at all. A bevel does not have to be exactly straight, there are many razors with warps or uneven grinds. As long as the bevel is making even contact with the hone, it should be fine. Again, it's not about a wobbly edge, it's about how it shaves.
