I'm using the following brand (from Amazon)

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...164309-7326800

I guess it has good quality because I didn't have any problem lapping the 8k Norton...

    one more thing....

I don't soak the Shapton in water before each use, I only spread some water over the stone before using it ( I do it because the instructions from Shapton say that)

I will try to lap again my shapton tonight, and will round the corners a little more, just to be sure that's not the problem...

one question, without the use of the microscope I can see small porous regularly distributed in the stone...all over the stone....is this normal?

Some one has a Shapton 15k close photo to compare?

The pores don't sound right at all, mine is perfectly smooth and dense even under a microscope. You may be able to lap past it, but it's possible the stone is bad.

I don't soak either of my Shaptons either, I've heard some guys have had problems with that - the stone just isn't designed for saturation. I just run it under the tap for a few seconds, then refresh it with a spray bottle while I'm honing. When I'm finished I run it under the tap again and rub it with my palm to loosen the swarf.

One other thing that I've found is critical with the Shaptons is to make sure your blade is completely oil-free or the oil will penetrate the stone and it will start loading up with swarf and getting sticky and gritty. I run my razors under the hot tap water for a few minutes to wash off any oil before I start honing.

I guessed that...but I'm not too sure if my definition of pores is correct....

I will try to take a pic of mine......

    I'm back....

this is a picture of my Shapton 15k, the pen is for size reference.....

the pencil mark is to see the surface of the stone more clear, but I think the pic is clear enough to discover the pores of the stone....

I don't know if this is normal, or maybe a defective stone...

    Wow, that's a big picture.

I just did the same pencil thing with my 15k and got similar results, so I think it's normal, or at least not unusual.

    Parker...

    one more question....

Do you see "pores" on the stone? Not just inside the pencil mark...the "pores" all over the shapton.....

Do you have the same kind of surface in your stone?

    Thanks again

I'd say it looks pretty similar, but I don't see the "pores" you're talking about, neither on my stone or in your photographs.

    he he he eh.....

That was the main reason of the picture....

I think my definition of "pores" is not accurate...

Thanks a lot for your time...have a great day...
