Thanked: 4What is going on with my blade?
I have the basics of honing down now, but what has happened to this blade and what does it need? It was professionally honed, and not used much. The pictures have been taken at 50x, and I'm wondering if this is why I can't seem to get a good shave. In comparison to a double edged blade under the microscope this is awful. The double edge is flawless. Can someone show me what nice edge looks like after stropped under a microscope?
Can I tag someone in this message?
Thanks
Justin

looks like micro chipping could be from too much pressure when honing

Here is a link to a youtube video. He does a nice job of showing various edges under a usb microscope. Edges with fewer or no scratch marks provide me with the smoothest shaves.

Thanked: 13249As on FB
Ok first off look at the DE blade that is at most honed on a 3k, at most, now look again at the SR blade see how much smoother the bevel is looking ??? That shows it was honed on a much higher stone what we see here is a MINUTE portion of the blade that tells us that it was honed, and that "Something" is amiss,, nothing more..
That "Dinger" (seen at 50X) could have been caused by a multitude of reasons from Carbide popping to contamination of the strop..
Ask the guy that honed the razor..
Also Justin you really should give the guys here all the info about the razor too, just like on the FB page
"Razor isn't even 5 years old. Honed less than a year ago."
I answered before reading that statement too, that changes things, can we see a pic of the entire blade ???? not just the dingerLast edited by gssixgun; 12-01-2014 at 05:00 AM.

To much honing pressure and from the scratch pattern it looks to me like it was run straight up and down the hone instead of using an X stroke.

Thanked: 13249The only thing that stands out as an issue from the second set of pics is the odd Marking in the middle of the edge, it almost looks like a Soap Scum line but I can't tell from the pics.. Also there are some tiny spots of rust showing on the face of the blade, is there rust / corrosion at the edge too ???
Just for clarification ..
This razor was honed months ago ???
It has been shaved and stropped about how many times ???
I am trying to determine the cause, the solution is apparent, it needs to be touched up at the least, that dinger needs to be taken out, but what we don't know is why it is there..
That would be nice for you to know so perhaps it won't happen again, or perhaps it is just time for a re-hone..Last edited by gssixgun; 12-01-2014 at 10:39 AM.
