Proceed through normal progression, on to naturals. This Belgian coticule creates micro serrations at the edge.


The J-nat helps smooth out those serrations.


For Final finish this striped Thuringian refines even more. peek-a-boo.


Blade still shows an un-even bevel line however...


The shave test WTG & ATG flat on the face along the entire edge is positive. A re-purposed Wade & Butcher silent shaver that will finally function properly. Enjoy

Geezer once traded me a hone lot for this coticule. After a long search it has been identified as La Nouvelle Vein.

I set the bevel on a 3k shapton. Progressed to bbw with slurry. Flipped it over and honed coticule with water until I was finished. This razor is a pain in the butt to hone. Warped at the toe, missing heel due to its factory grind (ground into the heel by 1/8") so it was removed.

Hone wear is unsightly and it costs $5...

But it shaves very well.. and I have no remorse for what I put it through. That's a win in my books.

Unknown vintage razor. Pretty beat. Took a coticule slurry stone to knock off the rust spots. Then metal polish. It's where I like it now. Worn but usable.

Thank-you Mike for putting this in Hone of the day. I would never have thought of removing spine to get proper bevel set. I will be taking your advise and bookmarking this post for future reference. Modine you have taught me something new once again. I am guessing that you lost the wings on the show side of the blade making it shaveable again? Final pictures of that spine look much better than what you started with.

I have been using this progression a lot lately. The Ohira is extremely fast and easily removes the 1k scratches taking the edge really close to being finished. My Wakasa is extremely hard hone that does not scratch on water only and cuts fast. The set up works on hard steels, such as Japanese, and wear resistant steels, such as stainless, very well.

Thank you and yes sir the spine is completely altered and corrected. The original scroll work or engraving is lost. Could the scroll work or engraving contribute to the blade warpage? Standard slab sided near wedges can show un-even grind or warpage too.

Been a while since I posted. Here is an oldy that ate my lunch for hours. About four+B
Hones: Chosera 1K, old barber's fast cutting Coticule, And the blue/ green? Thuringer that came with it. No tape.

Why? Well the old razor had a 1.5mm deep chip in the middle of the edge, and weak steel behind the ding. Almost there and then the edge would collapse at the ding. Why take the time...foolish, but I needed the practice... The spine on one side was a bit wonky also.


She does shave very well!

It's been a while for me too, I've been traveling a bit, took the nieces to France for their graduation presents and bought three old razors at a flea market in Avignon, and one is a near new quite interesting 8/8 faux frameback actually made a few miles north of Avignon, likely in the 1800s.

This is a refresh of a Manaslu M-55 on a handheld Hatanaka iro razor koppa trying out a new nagura that has too many cracks unfortunately. Usually iro (multicolor) JNats are softer, especially the more strongly colored ones, but this one is a hard razor grade stone as the stamps would indicate. Alex Gilmore had a bench size hard iro similar to this 7-8 years ago I believe. Results were quite good both with diamond and this tomo, but I think I need to identify a perfect tomo nagura for it. But that's part of the fun!

Beautiful color stone Steve, awesome. Here's an old Tom Turner re-scaled finished on "unknown" J-nat.


No stamp, pretty tree ring pattern. With slurry.


Easy to use finisher for razors, regardless of what mine it came from.

Ok I am back as well. Chosera 1,5,8K then MK got the Phig. Duck5 was given to the Trans Ark.
Duck1-4 got the Iromono with crushed Koma slurry, Crushed on a 1100 Atoma because yes Koma scratches Iromono.
