Found a very small chip in the edge of my Puma 63. Back to the Naniwa 12k then to the Gok 20k. New hone for my Bengall previously finished on a coti finishing it off on my Narutaki Mizu Asagi with tenjou nagura then own slurry then clear water. Refinished my Dorko on this again as well

A Russian razor marked Vacha "Volga". These razors came from the Trud factory (1960s?) and are totally awesome steel. Seldom have I run across this fine of razor steel. Available in 5/8 half hollow grind.


I sold one to a local fellow and regretted it ever since.This one became available off Ebay for my personal collection. The blade had slight oxidation and was taken to 600 compound and progressed up to blue and green grease-less buffing compound

The plastic scales are very brittle. If one should need to tighten the pivot pin, care must be taken. I have cracked several over the years. It's easy enough to make new scales, and these razors deserve better. Refine edge further w/ striped thuringian & light green thuri slurry.


You can push the edge as far as it can go. Edge retention is very high. Cost is quite reasonable even with postage. Final finish w/vintage oil on very hard unknown brown thuri-esque type stone.

The one on the left is the Oozuku mizu asagi I have posted about before. The one the right is an Aiiwatani that Maksim recommended to me for a tomonagura. It produces a nice slurry with little effort. It works very fast, lots of swarf after 50 roundtrips on the Oozuku. The edge produced after those 50 roundtrips is really keen. No further improvement after 50 roundtrips on the Oozuku without a slurry.

I honed up my newly restored W&B 8/8+
It had no bevel to start with.

I started with the Chosera 1k and a DMT slurry. Just rolling X strokes.
Soon realised that I needed some of those Lynn semi circle rolling strokes to reach the edge of the tip and I used 4 and a bit layers of tape.
I also used the microscope for this as I was taking no chances

It took a while to create and set the bevel but I didn't want to chance an uneven bevel using circles. Nor did I fancy going below 1K.

Once set I killed it on the side of the stone and brought it back with just water, then I slightly deadened it on my nail and brought it back once more , really soft strokes with water.

Then onto the Maruka with a Botan slurry, quite thick, just one dilution and then repeated.

Then the Tenjyou, one thick slurry diluted once x 2 and not too much work or time spent on them.

Next the Mejiro . Just one slurry and one dilution, this slurry cuts fast and leaves its own impression on the bevel quick smart. (This one is not an Asano)

Then the Koma. One thick slurry with one dilution. This slurry left the bevel shiny like a mirror.

Finally the Tomo . I used my new hard Tomo . Made a DMT slurry and coxed it onto the Nakayama.
A weak slurry but plentiful, with one dilution.
Finishing with 10 slow laps.

The shave was outstanding, really special . No nicks and still smooth the following day.

Hone On Gents !!

I haven't laid my hands on my stones for far too long, so I went a little over board today. Refreshed my Boker, and got a few bevels set. Finally started on fixing up my Greaves.

I recently failed miserably with honing two different razors for a friend and member here at SRP and I can't say why; however I guess my heart just wasn't into taking the time to get them right. With that said today I had a wonderful day touching up a razor for a very special guy:

My Son.

He'd learned the age old art at the age of 17 and could use both hands right out of the chute and didn't get a single nick or cut. I'd invested in a very nice Friodur 8/8 and gave it to him for Christmas and then had custom scales made for him for his birthday a few months later.

All was well for about 3 years and then he lost interest and reverted back to the dreaded 'Disposables'. A year ago he grew a so called 'beard' to say it wasn't 'Flattering' would be an understatement. I did get him to use a DE to trim the 'beard'. Well today he showed up and wanted to shave it off with 'His Straight'.

I'd used it a few times so I put a layer of tape on the spine/went back to the Norton 8K and then the Naniwa 12 stropped the hell out of it and let him have a go after some prep.

He wanted to use the electric hair clippers to trim his beard down and I told him that wasn't needed.

I had him shower and shampoo his beard and then use some conditioner on it and then after rinsing he was ready to go/No I didn't do the hot towel trick as I felt it would be unnecessary.

I made some lather and after applying it to his beard I had him rub it in well and then more lather.

Two passes later with NO BLOOD and once again using both hands he looks like the son I know.

It's a GOOD DAY AT THE BOARS NEST!

Good quality pic as far as I can tell. Colours look very true.
