[QUOTE=celticcrusader;1624460]Just starting to find the time to fit in a few of my own razors for a light touch up in fact I'm going to give this beautiful Iwasaki half hollow 7/8 a run out on Sunday.
It's hard sometimes to find time to shave with let alone hone your own razors sometimes when you are honing for others.

Thanked: 13245Interesting one
This is a Jacob Ray custom that made it's way here
The owner and I both tried to get a bevel to hold without Tape but the micro-chipping was firece,, after a few tries I finally resorted to messing around with it..
At 1 layer of tape I could hold the edge to 5k, and finally at 2 layers I got through the 10k
I went with my Nakayama for the finisher to finesse the best edge I could out of it, I wonder how the longevity of the edge will be
They are not all fun hehehehe

So after a not very pro buff and polish of my recent Fili 14 acquisition I gave her the usual treatment on the hones. Bevel set no tape gentle X-strokes to sharp using Chosera 1k with slurry then clean progressing through Naniwa 3/8 combo finishing on Naniwa 12 and GMN-200. This blade went easy peasy all the way through. Nice fine bevel and was a joy to hone and really took a superb edge. Shave was just great. This is my first Filarmonica and I can see now what the buzz was all about these razors. This one is definitely going in my favorites box.
thanks for lookingDon't drink and shave!

Not positive Karl but here are my "Thoughts"
I feel the geometry was correct as to the 16° arena, that pretty much leaves it to either steel choice, not really sure what this is.. Perhaps a Steel vs Temper issue..
The Microchipping was appearing fast and consistently across the edge, I tried killing the edge several times only to have it re-appear again.. When I added the single layer of tape I could get through the 1k and into the 5k but as I started on the way out of the 5k lightening up on the strokes, boom the chips started coming back again.. Of course I tried a really light draw on the corner of the 5k to kill the edge and tried a couple more times to draw out the fine edge..
Finally when I put on the 2nd layer it held the edge all the way through..
The one thing that will take some time to learn is if the edge holds for any longevity..

That is the one thing that gives me pause before getting a custom razor. They sure are purty ,but if it doesnt shave I have a $500 paperweight.Your only as good as your last hone job.

I agree to an extent, get that custom from one of the guys who didn't just start, and always talk to guys like Glen to see if he's had any particular razor new guys in his hands, best way I know of the make sure you get a great product.

Thanked: 2284Jonathan, at the Michigan meet I'll have my Ali's Blade and my Gipson blade. You can check em out, both are superb shavers and I've got around 5-6 shaves on both. Edges ar still very keen.
