Fast forward a year, and now the bevel is more or less even because I have a better feel for pressure and count passes on the stones religiously. My assumption (and we all know how those are) is that he's fairly new and making similar mistakes to what I was not so long ago.
True, but it also depends on how much steel he removed, as beginners also tend to remove too much. If he is honing up into the belly of a hollow ground razor then the width issue could newly be coming into play. Your explanation though is probably more likely.

    Why after bevel set?

What did the spine look like when you started?

    Photos would help.

Spine has no wear. I just tape out of habit.

So you meant, tape before, you bevel set to protect the spine?

I am assuming you are going for a double bevel then, and not to protect the spine?
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

I guess a micro bevel because the tape will change the angle. Is this a No no?
