Yes. I would like to see evidence of Livi only honing up to 3k.
I am linking a video that shows Livi honing a new razor. To my non-expert eye it looks like he goes way beyond 3k.

Thanked: 481So just eyeballing those stones, 1000 grit of unknown manufacture, probable synthetic yellow of unknown grit and manufacture, Belgian coticule (probably around 8K, so easily 2.5x the aforementioned 3K), and is that a translucent Ark at the end of his hone progression? That came as a legitimate surprise. And then there's the mastro Livi loom strop...1 side linen - chromium oxide pasted (This is 30k equivalent iirc?), the other side leather. Safe to say that's well beyond 3k.

Well sounds like you have debunked Almonds theory there Marshall. Nothing like proof instead of the drivel, thank you. Tc

Thanked: 3honing a gold dollar is great fun.
yesterday I sat down calculating what 'kit' I had gathered and expenses for a getting a foot into straight shaving.
now totalling all the expenses, including
1. gold dollar + leather strop + #10,000 diamond paste = $15.99
2. leather strop compound green bar = $2.94
3. paddle strop = $6.66
4. 10000/3000 grit sharpening stone (100mm) = $3.81
5. 6000 grit DMD (100mm) = $7.99
6. ZY straight razor (received gold monkey) HRC60 steel = $12.99
7. 12000 jade green (50mm) = $2.20
8. 240/800 carborundum = $2.00
Total expenses incurred for newbie: $54.48
Don't you think that rocks.
anyone who can allocate such a small budget can easily hone their own razors and get the satisfaction of a straight razor shave.
who cares if I wreck that razor honing it the wrong way, it is a great learning tool to learn how to hone, to learn how to shave with a straight. It would have given me the heebiejeebies if I were to order an expensive dovo or TI and start learning to shave and honing that. The GD that I hone, gives me a close enough shave that lasts for well over a day and I need to shave only every alternate day. It's that close and smooth.
