AAAAAAAaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!'
Help.....!!!
Having successfully renewed the cutting edge on my Cadman last month I decided I needed to refresh the edge last night. I knew I didn't need to get the stones out, I especially knew that incorporating the Welsh DT was unnecessary and a mistake, yet I persisted. Disaster. Now I have a dull, very dull, razor. It's so dull I could lick it. Panicking and tired (it was late), I decided a desperate situation called for decisive and bold action; taking the razor I ran the edge across the glass handle of the Pyrex glass jug containing the water, now I was in uncharted waters! Whipping up a muddy surface with the slurry stone I set to work, Lynne on the iPad beside me, attempting to reset the bevel that I by now considered lost, but it was to no avail. Thirty minutes later I admitted defeat.
Current situation: One dull as dirt Cadman Bengall. Tools: Dragons Tongue, PHIG, red and black pasted strop. Skill Level: Clark Griswold.
Question: What stone would you recommend I obtain to rescue the situation, would a Naniwa 1 or 2 k be best here?

If you have the money to burn then
1K chosera. 5, 8 superstones. And perhaps a 12K.
You need a full rotation, not just a bevel setter. 1K sets the bevel, 5K pre polishes it, 8K gives you the lower end of a shaving edge (it'll be higher grit than the DT).
The DT and Phig will only work on a set and pre polished edge. There also slow, so even from a 5K edge they will struggle to final polish. 8K they will work.
There is a set on knives and tools, 1, 5, 10K superstones for £150. The 1 K superstone isn't the best but it'll work. The rest of that set is good.
The other option is the king 1/6 + an 8K superstone.
I've literally just posted a wall of text in this thread.

My posts are all UK based with UK prices. So have a good look through the links I have posted, And if you look fruitfully at that 2/5 eden stone be aware it is an unknown and totally a gamble.Real name, Blake

Thanked: 1160If you have a DE to use then do so and send your razor to Lynn to have it sharpend proper.Meanwhile Lynn sells Naniwas and personally they are great stones to use and they can also reccommend which stone to purchase for future bevel setting and honing. Cheers all is not lost .

It won't be Lynn, it's a UK based thread. Celtic crusader or Gary Haywood are the UK men.

Thanked: 3795I can set a bevel with a dragon's tongue, but I know what I am doing. Have you ever set a bevel on any razor?

Thanked: 3215Yup, the King, Norton or Naniwa line in a 1,4,8K progression or as close as possible, then finish on the Phig. Burnish it with a Carbon Steel knife to improve performance, but as said will perform slowly and only after a good 8k bevel.
Put the DT away and do not use it until you have mastered synthetics, then at least if you muff the edge, you can fix it with synthetics. Of the two the Phig is probably the better finisher and certainly easier to use.
It’s not that hard you just don’t have the right tools.

Thanked: 3215Here are 3 very good honing threads from a new guy honing problem razors successfully from bevel set to polish, with excellent micrograph photos.
He is using a synthetic progression. The hardest things for new guys is knowing when to move up, on a grit and when the bevel is fully set. The OP took great photos, that show exactly what to look for and how to tell when the bevel is set.
Second Try at Honing.
Is This Microchipping.
Should I Tackle This Difficult Challenge?

I have purchased a pair of Naniwa Superstones, 220/1000 and 2000/5000 grit, might I may get away with these and the PHIG as a finisher?
