If I saw that differential appearance of the edge relative to the rest of the bevel with my microscope, I would assume a poor shave if the razor had just come off the hones.

However, if it was an old edge that had convexed over a long time from abrasive stropping, those can shave fine; but I don't think that is what is shown in the photo. I'm sticking with poor shave.

It's neat that the consensus is- there is no consensus. HHT means nothing, the photo can be interpreted many different ways, and swallows don't shave.

It proves the only conclusive test is a shave test, and since I didn't shave with it I'll just have to guess! I'll guess good shave. Like AlienEdge said- you wouldn't suffer through a complete shave if it wasn't good. At least I hope you wouldn't.

Swallows don't shave? I dunno, the ones around here are pretty clean cut suave looking birds.

Hmm... interesting challenge. Hard to say because I don't know the blade. Usually, I'm making comparisons on the same blade through the progression when looking at it under magnification. Given the condition of the edge, from that one angle, with that lighting - without any reference points - I'm going to guess it shaved OK but you want to spend a little time on your hones making it shave great.

Poor shave. The edge doesn't look clean at all, possibly overhoned. I would joint it and work it with tomo slurry to see if that takes care of it. Level of magnification or some reference of scale would help.

I am sorry, but a high magnification picture of an edge doesn't tell me anything about how it shaves. I have seen mirror shine edges that shave like crap and I have seen some with a few microchips that didn't affect the quality of the shave whatsoever.

I have a few vintage razors in my collection that have a few microchips that I didn't bother honing out because they didn't affect the shave negatively whatsoever.

Very true. Pictures dont tell me as much as my calibrated HHT which is 99% accurate. Sorry HHT haters. Hahahaha.

I don't think there are any who really hate the HHT method. Unless you have it calibrated they are of not much use for a novice is all. Personally I am too lazy to bother to calibrate for the HHTs. After awhile you have a pretty fair idea from looking at the edge if it will shave smoothly or not. Either way there are bound to be some surprises when it comes to the actual shave test that will leave you a bit puzzled.

Assuming what we see here is the Ura side,I would like a peek at the Omote. I see a little micro chipping and possibly some strop induced convexing. The shave , I have no idea. Is the swallow speed a Monty Python reference or > Estimating the Airspeed Velocity of an Unladen Swallow | style.org
