When we moved in three years ago, the commode tanks had about 3/4 inch of sand. A softener solved the problem.
A softener has nothing to do with grit and sand. it just affects the carbonates in the water. As a matter of fact grit in the water will destroy the resin in your tanks. Most softeners have a filter attached usually 30 or 40 microns specifically to filter out the grit.

I know my unit after 4-5 months the pre filter has turned from white to black.

Yeah, maybe it would be interesting to try to charge a strop with calcium carbonate. Perhaps it is the one of the active/inactive ingredients in the supposedly innocuous Solingen white paste?
Now I had to look up the ingredients of Bon Ami!

More Feldspar [6.5 MOHs] than limestone [Calcium Carbonate at 3 MOHs]

Many other ingredients including Xanthan gum and citric acid....

Put that on your hone and much different than "plain" water.

An interesting thing I learned while looking is that Trilobites had compound eyes that used calcite crystals for the lenses.

Calcite is found in nature in optical grade. it also comes in a variety called "Iceland Spar" which is also optical quality and is double refractive.

I read a little about this also. There are so many interesting things and I have sometimes been accused about going off topic!

That may be the original formulation for Bon Ami. The current container just lists calcium carbonate as an active ingredient.
