Maybe I should stop making this sort of tongue in cheek jab at the quarter Nortons. Don't get me wrong, that will work (and Arkansas stones are my personal favorite stones to finish on). But that also adds figuring out slurry to the list of things you, as a new honer, will have to learn.

A King 1k, $20, Norton 4/8k or Naniwa 3/8k about $100, Chef Knives to Go, 1k/400 grit Diamond plate, a stick of good Chrome Oxide, $15.

    And your set for life.

I don't care for the King 1k at all. Two other relatively cheap options that I consider to be much better, though costing more than the King, are the Arashiyama 1k and the Naniwa Traditional 1k.

Before you run off and buy any 1000 grit hone just start with a few sheets of sandpaper. I used this for many years and it works just fine. Get some 500 grit and some 1000 grit.
That will keep a bunch of money in your pocket and get the job done.

    Yup, it works.

Buy some Glass or ceramic tiles, My Home Depot sells 12X3x1/4 in. Glass tiles for 4-5 dollars, I have also used Ceramic tiles, just lap flat with 220 wet and dry, takes but a few minutes.

Glue on the sand paper with 3M 77 spray glue, to keep the paper from curling. The 1k paper stria is almost identical to a Chosera 1k.

There is also a post in the WIKI. Here is a post on using sand paper.

While you're at Home Depot, pick up the wet and dry sandpaper there as it's a really high quality. The ones sold at say--Harbor Freight and Ace Hardware aren't as heavy duty. Is the Home Depot more expensive, Yes, but it's well worth the money
