    Default Honing Advice Needed

Okay, maybe I can get some insight from you guys.

    Using Norton 1k 4k/8k
Trying to completely hone a few of my rougher razors for practice.
1st - heel needed work, but I got it shaving
2nd - hollow honed quickly with rolling motion

    3rd/4th
Cannot get a proper bevel. My test for a good bevel is the heel/center/toe will easily shave my arm. Cannot get to that point.
Stone need lapping? Rolling X technique just needs more work? I feel like with the amount of time spent I should have gotten a good edge from them.
    Probably something super obvious.

    Thanks guys.
    - Joshua

First lap your stones to assure they are flat.
Next check both sides of spine with straight edge to be sure they are straight. If warped fill in low spots with electric tape and cover spine with one layer of tape.
Now you have flat stones and straight spines to start with. Try and see if it helps set bevel properly.

There are a lot of things that it could be, but I think most of my arg razors have been even stroke issues leading to errors in the bevel set and creation of that perfect and continuous apex. There are a thread I have found helpful

The link Glen posted is a very helpful one as is the marker test.

I find when im having issues setting bevel its uneven preasure along the entire edge. I find about 3/4 of an inch behind the tip is my weak spot. I will get a great bevel except that spot and i know what it is. Correct my stroke and that fixes it.

Post some pics of the razors, both sides as clear as you can get.

    Look at the edge.

Need some good pics, Josh. Need to see the hone wear and edge. Maybe a few looking at the spine and edge, from the tail. I've come across some that are warped, and twisted. A real blast to hone....not! A narrow hone can be your friend, or the first 3/4", from the edge of a larger stone, or the side of the hone itself, even.

As said...Honing is easy, till it isn't. But that's where the fun is.!

Here is the problem right here. Kidding a bit There is no time or number of strokes that can surely set a bevel. The bevel is set when it is set, not when 'surely I've spent enough time setting the bevel' occurs. Some of them take a lot longer than what seems possible.

Got my 1k lapped. If my lapping stone is true, then it did need lapping.
I'll try to post pics later.

I don't count strokes or anything like that. I was just thinking that after spending a substantial amount of time (not just a few minutes) working on a clean, chip free edge that I could have gotten the bevel set or made some improvement. Then again, I'm no pro and I'm here to learn!

    Thanks guys

I don’t personally care for those so called lapping stone and IMHO you are better off getting a Atoma 400 lapping plate and later down the line you can buy a 1200 stick on replacement and put it on the back side of the 400 and now you have a lapping plate and slurry plate
