So did the stone have some sort of toxic streak in it?

It had pits that were breaking down and causing the edge to chip. Not any more. Thanks for the explanation on the finish. I had no clue this happened with Jnats. I will need to pay closer attention to this. The finish in the pic looks very gray in color so I'm not sure if it would reflect or not. I will check in the next day or two and see.

Couldn't help myself. I just got home and checked. Yes, it does reflect. I put a business card up to the edge and seen the reflection on the face of the blade and all the way to the edge across the bevel. I will need to check some more I do from different Jnats.

Were the pits just small holes or did they contain harder inclusions ? Small holes are typical in a stone called Suita which can be a very fine pre-polisher for razors & a finisher for other tools but rarely a razor finisher, tho with hard steel you can force a good edge sometimes.
The fact a few swipes on your 20k does the trick shows your stone is in the ball park at least.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I havent done the few swipes on the 20k since i got it back. No need. From what I was told, the pits were just that. Pits. Not SU as i first thought. They were wider and not deep tiny pin holes. And the sides of these pits would break off easy as when running your edge over them they would crumble causing a ragged edge.

I learned a lot from this. Now that it is about a third thinner most of the pits are gone. A few are still hanging around but with the edge i got from this stone the other day I very pleased.
I used a diamond plate for slurry a couple times, than a very hard Tomo to polish three times, finishing on broken down slurry with a light hand. Not really thinned out slurry so it was still working the edge a little.

I did two other razors with a little difference in how i went about it with them. One was keen but not much for comfort. Tomorrow i will test the last one.
    onimaru55 and Steve56 like this.
