Well said. This one of the most tedious subjects regarding honing that keeps getting revisited. In theory it may matter but in everyday real life it does not matter a bit.

The problem with the whole Tape theory is this line

"The razor is designed to wear evenly and equally to keep the angle the same" This is TRUE and it perpetuates this stupid discussion.

That isn't the reality, nor what we see in practice, reality shows us even brand new production razors that are destroyed with one honing session..

Another reality, if you are wearing out the tape while honing you SHOULD keep using tape until you don't Duuuuhhhhhh it means you have heavy hands and need the tape.. ***SMDH***

Thanks to my personal mentor for spelling it out, I have never used a bevel setter more than once on any of my personal razors. If you have, your doing something wrong...

I have used tape and then no tape and the edge or at least my edges are no better or worst and even not using tape I have noticed no hone wear even after several honings but when I first stated I grinded more than one razor down on a 1K

That pretty much describes my first month and couple of razors.

One reservation that I have about the advice to noobs to use tape is you won’t see any spine wear, and that’s to me an important part - too much spine wear is telling you to lighten up. Tape covers that up. This assumes that the razor is expendable of course.

This is also my experience. As a few people have pointed out, once your bevel is set you really shouldn't ever need to hone using anything but a finisher. Except that not all of us are simply honing so we can have a sharp razor to shave with: some of us make the it dull so we have an excuse to go hone! I really enjoy going right down to a bevel reset, to play around and experiment.
