I prefer to use none. However if you must limit the time on them!! 3-4 very light strokes. Same with a finishing stone. I do 15-20 on a naniwa 12k. That's all I need.

Wow - thanks MrMagnus - that's one of the most clear illustrations of edges I have seen regarding results from different methods. I'm at the point, with just over a year, that I get the idea of, "sharp" as opposed to, "smooth". I experienced the difference with two brand new razors, honed by the same person, one was like butter, the other was harsh (only word I can think of to describe). After some stropping, the edge smoothed out.
But I've never seen, nor did I think you could actually "see" the difference between the two edges! Once again, it's true, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Sheesh, it's the morning and I've already learned something new...now just to figure out what the heck a JNAT is....

Thanked: 267
How dare you post and do everything that a new guy should do! You listed all your parameters, experience, and put forth an opinion based on your experiences. That's all good IMHO! A respectful reply where you were going wrong would, of course, be warranted!
That said. I use a piece of felt that is impregnated with CBN and use it like a barbers hone. I am able to keep a razor going for months with 15 or 20 laps when needed. I do however, prefer to shave straight off my Asagi but, find that I just don't have the time to go to the rocks as much as I would prefer.
When looking at pastes. What they are applied to is important. Paste on a strop will yield different results than say the identical paste applied to balsa or put into a slurry on a hone.
Through all this, I am reminded of a thought that came from Lynn "I have never seen a edge that can't be improved with the correct use of pastes". I personally like that one.

Richard

Cheers (Jnat = Japanese Naturalstone
The one i used was a Ozuku Asagi). Natural stones give you this somewhat fog/mist bevel, dont ask me why cuz im not that deep into the rabbit hole when it comes to honing. I just know i like the shaves thay deliver better and thats good enuff for me.
