Thread: Honemeister accredidation?

Brings to mind the varying opinions on DE blades on other forums. I get decent shaves out of a Derby or a Merkur but I never found a Dorko DE worth a darn. OTOH, I think the Gillette Swede is the best DE blade made but I have seen guys say they are only average.
Seeing how the YMMV applies in the DE world no doubt the same applies with straights. As far as achieving recognized honemiester status I have a ways to go. If I ever get there it would be nice to be recognized by my peers. Meanwhile I am happy that I have been able to get my own razors sharp and smooth enough for my own use. Like Lynn says, having fun.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

The purpose is unclear. Is it to allow more people to become a recognized hone for hire, or Some sort of stamp allowing the accredited's opinion to carry more weight in a discussion?

Thanked: 1587I would be happy to critique others' honing skills. I think everyone knows I am an impartial and fair-minded person, who is not caught up in his own self-importance, nor has delusions of grandeur.
If accepted, I propose we call the scale of honemeister-ability a "Jimbo". Of course, I have heard this Lynn guy is OK, so he can have a 0.99 Jimbo rating. All the rest of you, get in line and no pushing at the back there!! (I'm looking at you, Gugi - Don't make me come back there!!)

How much gorm would you say is required to obtain a .70 Jimbo rating?

Honestly Kevin, when I hatched this half baked thought, I did not think the purpose would be either. SRP has had informal peer recognition of honing ability for much longer than I've been around here. My thoughts were with those starting out in the honing process and working to gain some level of publicly recognized achievement. In some forms already mentioned (IF someone hires out their services, their customer's satisfaction is a credit to their abilty or members will send their honed razors to other members for testing and either public or private criticism whichever the honer desires).
Rather than being a community that simply shares an interest in collecting objects, we're a community that has many members that enjoy learning a skill; a skill that improves with practice.
It's not a big deal, it's just a thought that occurred to me and I thought I'd spit it out in a post.
