    Default Confused

    Hi Folks,

Now I'm confused. I was under the impression that the Norton 220/1k are for repairing damaged razors/blades. The Norton 4k/8k is used for periodic maintenance/polishing/finishing. This is what I was lead to believe on the Web. I'm glad I joined this site. Now, I'm finding out the Nortons 4/8 shouldn't be used unless my edge is gone, so for periodic honing/maintenance, I should be using what? Coticule, DMT extra fine, Chinese 12k, or a 16k. I don't want to screw up the edge that Lynn put on my razors. I will order Lynn's DVD, in the meantime. How do I maintain a couple of Dovo's honed by Lynn? What's the best way to go. I do strop my blades. I really didn't want to get into pastes unless I have to. Thanks in Advance.

Try this link, and take a look at the "see also" section therein: What hone(s) do I need? - Straight Razor Place Wiki

I firstly purchased the norton set up. But to maintain my blades i have bbw and yellow coticule and i have used the bbw with slurry 50 laps and yellow coticule with 20 light slurry and then agood 50 light passes on water and this was on my dovos and they super smooth and shave briliant i've even done a lot more passes probably double and had no probs with over honing people do say you carn't over hone with the belgiums so long as you keep it light on the strokes.I'm sure norton will come in handy but i will always use my belgums as it is so easy. For maintanace you'd realy only need a yellow coticule. look on the classified section robs selling some good quality bouts.

I used the Norton combo followed by chromium oxide pasted paddle to refresh my edges for a long time. Even just the 8k to refresh will get you there, you just might want a little more after that.

Since Lynn honed the razors, you may want to contact him and ask his expert opinion on how to maintain your Dovos. You don't have to get into pastes. You can have someone else sharpen your razors or you can use a finishing hone

No, it stands for Big Boobed Woman!

Actually it stands for Belgian Blue Whetstone

--> Ardennes Coticule - natural sharpening stones from Vielsalm Belgium. - Whetstones (scroll down the page a bit)
