Help with hone identity/history
I have recently traded for a hone that came to me from France. The name on the sticker ont he hone is "La Lune" " Double Face" (Extra Extra) Pierre a Rasior.
Some of this I understand from long ago french courses and the use of the trusty french-english dictionary.
But I would like to know if this hone is a belgian hone that was sold in France. What age the hone could be. and if I should use this hone like a coticule. This hone looks like the pictures of coticules I have seen. It comes with a slurry stone and is in a small orange cardboard box top with natural colored cordboard bottom box. Hone and slurry stone both fit in the box. both the hone and slurry stone are in excellent shape.
stone measures 52mm wide x 137mm long x 23mm thick. slurry stone is 52mm x 24mm x 21mm.
The only information I have been able tofind via search engine also links to ardennes coticule, not sure if all of that is correct so here I am.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by scrapcan; 01-03-2009 at 05:49 AM.

If you were able to post pictures and it is a coticule, we'd almost assuredly be able to make a positive ID for you from even one photo. Without pictures, it's very hard to ID a stone. Can you post some pictures?

If you say it looks like coticules that you have seen photos of then it probably is a coticule. Here is a Wiki article posted by Bart who knows his Belgian stones.

I will get pictures up as soon as I can, most likely tomorrow. How close up do you need them? The hone just arrived today and it needs to be clened up but it shouldwork for pictures.
hang in there a bit an I will get the pictures up.

Maybe it's a Belgian Blue Whetstone (BBW)?
What color is the slurry from it?

I think Ive seen similar labels on thuringians(eschers), stone looks similar as well.

It is confusing. The label saying natural and double face at the same time. I would guess that it is a barber hone like a Swaty. One side coarser then the other but the only way to tell is to put a razor to it and see how it performs. Lapping it will let you know something too. If it is a synthetic it will probably be a job to flatten it.

Interesting looking stone. Without the mention of natural in the label I'd have laid down money that it was synthetic. I can't recall seeing a synthetic that came with a slurry stone.
It is coarse? Is it a dual grit stone? Can you hone a razor on it and check out the scratch pattern? Aggressive scratch pattern or fine pattern yielding more of a polished edge?
Maybe it's the legendary and extremely rare "Le Chat" natural hone. A hone that reportedly blows any coticule, Escher or Asagi stone out of the water and is worlds more rare than even a Charnley Forest.
Ok, Ok, I made that up. But for you HADdicts out there, it got your blood pumping for a second, didn't it?
