I agree with Bud too. My 2"x8" Chinese is a great hone and does well. I still like the barber hones better. The good ones do a very comparable (or better) job, and I prefer their smaller size and faster cutting speed.

i bought a narrow Chinese 12k from ChrisL and i like the size so much i have been seriously thinking about cutting my norton 4/8k in half. its really comfortable for me in my hand. i also like the way i reacts when using the rolling X pattern. i may have to buy a big pack of hack saw blades and go to it

Yes, I can. Why do you ask?

    Nakayama: 中山

You say you have a Nakayama stone but there are different types of them.

belgian or chinese will take time more laps and then after each of them you must use chr02 etc.
Barber hone 3laps deal is done go to shave.take a look picture
    Bud.

Keep in mind this is from the gentleman with about 10 eschers.

I have seen a sample of his hone collection in person. I could pay my student loans off if I stole his stones and sold em here in the classifieds.

Take a look at the photo close ups of various abrasive stones. It was a revelation to me, not to mention their effects on a steel edge. Even wet or dry makes a huge difference in the quality of the edge sharpened on the same stone.
