seting bevel with dmt1200/1k naniwa

I have just set a bevel with my 1k naniwa and i just carn't seem to get that real drag over my tnt tpt also feels not sticky like normal a thew laps on the dmt after and i got that real drag tnt and tpt feels so sharp i carn't understand this any one else experianced this or is there a simple explanation?

Dunno, I set my first bevel with a Naniwa 1k yesterday and it was fast and easy. A HC 8/8 Henckles. Maybe that particular razor ? I am going to be doing more in the next couple of days so I will be better able to assess it. Loving the Naniwas so far though.

I 'm going to go back and see if i can get it sharper at bevel stage its happend on to razors.

Gary, have you seen this video here that commiecat posted yesterday ? Watch Lynn's demonstration of setting a bevel on the 1k Naniwa. It was as simple as that. Of course it depends on the condition of the particular edge, the alloy and what have you.

I had the same issue when I first tried the 1k nani. Did the same thing you did and just a few swipes on the dmt and the blades were good to go. I thought about it for a while and decided to re-flatten the nani with my dmt 325k again, and doing that changed the feel of the stone totally. The next blade I tried gave me the results I expected, and subsequent honings, on different blades, have produced similar results. I don't know if this will solve your issue, but it did mine.

I have watched the video prevous and it does look easy . I've set bevels a thousand times taken big chips out with my dmt 1200 took me 3 hours once if not 4 for but it worked. I can sense when the edge is ready of my dmt it defanatley feels sharper a touch with dmt. 1k naniwa feels somwhat sharp i tyed again with 1k then did laps on dmt more drag once again and stickier on tpt i have lapped naniwa several times and it does feel fine and is flat so i finished on the 1k 30 3k 20 5k of the 5k the edge felt alot sharper then 10 8k 10 12k stroped and edge strugled to pass hht on thick hair althought it did not that it proves any thing.

I went back reset bevel on dmt. 30 4k n 8k 15 then bbw 25 with light slurry coti water 25 stroped and razor passed hht with fine hairs very easily and shaved arm hair alot better so may be i am used to that set up.

I have honed athew of razors with naniwas and they have given me great shaves i've had to go back a couple of times but they do create a nice edge but the norton 4k/8k seem work well for me.

I have the norton 1k when i got my dmt1200 i must admit i never used the 1k norton since i was realy impressed with the dmt1200 from the start.

Some razors take longer than others, it depends on the steel. Do you have anythng that's coarser than a 1k, say a 220k or something?

no 1k is all i have the razor stainless but to be fair the bevel was'nt far off the dmt soon got the sharpness i wanted.

As for chips its very rear i hone razor with chip i only hone for my self so mainly maintanance honing unless a customer pops in my barbers they somtimes drop old ones in for practice.

I have lapped a thew times just to make sure, i can remember your post.
My razor just does'nt seem to get there like it did with the dmt. I will have to grab a razor of ebay and try again.

I would venture to say that no hone of comparable grit will cut as fast as a DMT. I like my 1200 very much and I have set many a bevel with it but I have found some edges didn't need that aggressive a hone and some chipped using it. Still with an old Sheffield wedge where a lot of metal needs to be removed or some of the tougher alloys I think it is indispensable.
