    Default Uneven hone wear

    Hello Folks,

I got a razor (Hess 44 stainless) from ebay which has an uneven hone wear on the spine (not so much wear but still uneven), The edge itself also does not look uniform: thinner on the tip of the blade. And finally, the bevel width on the sides differ. Here is the weapons on my arsenal:

    1. DMT 320
    2. DMT 600
    3. DMT 1200
    4. Naniwa lobster 1000/3000 combo
    5. Mitsufune 8000
    6. Chinese 12000
    7. MST Thuringian

I just can't really bear an uneven hone wear on my razor although I am able to get OK shaves (but not great) from this blade. So, what would be your suggestions?

    Thank you all

    Hi K,

WOW! that's a very well stocked honing armada. The best advice I can give you is to post some pictures of your blade so the resident honmeisters can have a good look. Also I'm curious to know whether you honed the blade yourself or did the ebay seller do that for you?

Lastly, if I were in your shoes, I would try working more with your finer stones to see if you can't refine the keeness of your edge with the bevel as is; in my view as long as your bevel is straight this should be possible. The other way to go is to start over from scratch and reset the bevel and re-sharpen your blade from that point.

That said, what you do will depend on your skill with a hone and your comfort level with potentially doing more harm than good as you experiment with it. So send it to EU based honmeister if you really want perfection.

    Cheers and Good Luck!

I agree Pic will help. Next your hones are good. Lastly if your edge is straight then you should be ok. As you said you are perfectionist then you will need to fix back(even up) of the blade this will fix the bevel.GL

I attached the pics but unfortunately I do not have means to post close-ups. I honed the razor myself to make it somewhat shaveable. I even followed Bart's advise to start from scratch and dulled the edge, and started with DMT 1200 but still cannot get rid of uneven bevel

    Any advice?

An uneven bevel can be caused by slight warping of the blade itself. There may not be anything you can do to make everything perfect.

I would suggest focusing more on setting a properly cutting bevel, and then proceed to refine the edge.

Then enjoy the Hess 44, it is a very fine shaver indeed!

    Nice pix Kemal!

Too bad I can't see the bevel or edge clearly. +1 to Seraphim, I don't think you have any damage on the razor; so it should come around. The only other variable is your honing technique; perhaps on the wider beveled side you're putting more pressure than on the thinner side while honing. Over time, as your technique improves that should iron itself out.

    Good luck and great shaving!

i think seraphim is right. you don't have to worry about bevel too much worry about cutting edge. if your cutting edge straight that is all matter. nice razor .

Yes, indeed I am new to this honing business, and I'll not give up honing this razor.

BTW, how can check if there is any warping on the blade?

put blade in flat surface and see light comes out from which part of the blade. in other words which part of the blade doesn't touch the surface. gl
