I'm not brave enough to try this test out sorry. I also have poor sensitivity in my fingertips (poor circulation), and I have very fine arm hair so neither of those tests will work reliably for me. I'll just stick to what I currently do - I do the arm hair test, only I use the hair on my legs - it's coarser (very similar in coarseness to my beard), so it catches better on the edge and cuts easier than my arm hair, which bends and slides off even the sharpest pro-honed razors.

Obviously this is a technique that someone used at some point in time to check the edge of razors...
I realize that Popeye is a cartoon and intended to be funny, however, I don't think the animators intended for the guy licking the blade to be a funny part of the cartoon, but is more representative of what one may have seen a barber of that era do to check a razor...
