Thanked: 2209The "like with like" comment is mainly about generating a slurry when I need a slurry. Lapping is an entirely different matter. I am not aware of the grit size of the Norton flattening stone so I cannot comment onit. Perhaps someone else will do so. .
Hope this helps,

So does that mean that it should not be used on the 4k/8k? I mean, it's not lapping with like vs. like, but Norton provides it for that very purpose right?

Senorswiss,
I agree with Randy's comment, "like with like" meaning only to raise the slurry. This is not the intent of the Norton lapping stone. It is coarse for one purpose only, to flatten other stones, not make a slurry so I fel Randy's comment stands.
Norton does make a Nagura stone specifically for it's fine water stones. Very few website show them but they are out there with some searching.

[QUOTE=ericm]I'm happy with my Shapton 15K stone. I've been using it to finish off my razors after the Norton 8K. I just bought a coticule, but haven't had it long enough to know how it compares.
I find the coticule is best used after the 8K Norton and then on to the 15K Shapton.

I was half way through and ready to start commenting on some of the quoted prices before I realized this was 2 and a half years old. Great thread though.
