Hmmm... Maybe try a shave off 8k & then skip the C12k & go str8 to Asagi.
You know ? just do something random. If yer shaves were harsh off the C12k till you modified the process maybe its the problem?? Dunno . Just a thought. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

'Gladly try
It sure can't hurt! 'Will try.
There's an antique show today. 'Hopefully some new toys to ride the rocks.
For all my whining about stroke counts - the end result is definitely wonderful. If I got similar results from a coti on a heavy sheffield, I'd probably like sheffields much more.
I'll post on results of 8k - asagi.
Thank again, Oz. 'Hope your weekend is great.

Eliminating the c12k eliminated over 1/2 the strokes or circles
Oz, it seems you've nailed it.
I never tried going from the 8k (nani) to the asagi, 'cause the asagi was slow, and I figured it needed all the readiness it could get. 8k tpt was good, so I went to the asagi with a moderate slurry. tpt was still good, but no better. I tried a small test shave patch on the heavier stubble, and it was good. I went back and stropped 100 canvas, 100 horsehide, and repeated the test. It was very very good. Instead of 100-200 circles and 50-100 x-strokes, it was 50 circles and probably 40 x-strokes. Wow, what a difference. 'Sure makes me look at the chinese stone differently.
Thanks for the suggestion. 'Hard to believe how well it worked.
I think I finally have a way to get Maurice paid without paypal - int'. M.O. I'm sure it will take some transit time, and there are much cheaper rocks, but at least it will have a high probability of being a very good rock (La Veinette).

That's more like it
Remember as our fearless leader Lynn says " less is more"
P.S. I told someone they might find their C12k redundant after buying a Jnat. Was that you ?The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

It might have been me
'Not sure if it was me, but in the thread on first date w/ jnat, you thought it would have been alot faster - in which case I can sure see it obsoleting the 12k. Now, it's obsoleted 'cause I'm superstitious it's killing my edge from the 8k.
'Honed up 4 blades today, never using the 12k. 'Great edges - about 1/3 the strokes. One Henry Sears that looks barely used (1883-1897). It was imported from Soligen, but the edge feels shapton 30k sharp. 'Can't wait to try it.

Thanked: 443Hey guys,
I'll just chime in that I've got a 6/8 extra-hollow that Pinklather honed on his Asagi and it's amazing. When he says it's vegan, it's true. On my first shave with it, I got distracted thinking about all the nice things I had to say about it and made a really rough landing that should have cost me 1/8" of upper lip. It didn't even nick.
Pinklather--I got a really fast coti bout to complement my really really slow coti, but haven't played with them too much. I'll work over my Greaves wedge with them and let you know how it comes out.
That fast bout darkens within 15 strokes on slurry, and sounds like a sharpening steel. It's so tactile that it feels alive.
Yours sounds like a nice stone. Do you have pictures yet, or a URL?
Talk to you later."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

still trying to get a coti
'Tried working w/ the mine, and delivered cost was over $400 for a 7" stone (la veinette). 'Tried a couple more routes and need to talk to a guy on monday to see if a Le Lateneuses might be available (known for speed). 'Seems I've gone through enough heartburn to get a particular vein that I'm a bit burnt out on it. I can live happily w/ hard steels and the asagi. 'Would like a coti. I can't say I've ever felt a really good edge on a heavy sheffield & have 2 waiting for some coti love.
If the pic you're curious about is the asagi - here goes, courtesy of the honorable So Yamashita.
BTW RoughKype: 'hard to say how happy it makes me that you like that edge. Little makes me fell better than someone enjoying an edge I've done. That kind of smooth launched a crusade to get the asagi (at great cost and heartburn). I love the smooth also. With great help from Oz and Jimmy, I stopped using the c12k before the asagi and can get results much more quickly. I've migrated to an edge somewhat more keen than that Vom Cleff, and gone to the point it being too demanding of technique. I'll figure out the approx. stroke count for vegan, carnivor & those levels in between.

Thanked: 443Hi PL,
I was curious to see your coti, but the Asagi is very pretty. Blue like a robin's egg.
Are you approaching the Sheffields with a coti on a hunch, or on a recommendation? Or just as an excuse for a nice big coticule?"These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."

no joy yet in getting my first Coti
It's almost a re-run of getting the asagi. $400+ seemed a bit steep for a full size coti, but that's what a La Veinette from Ardennes was quoted at. I tried to buy from a private seller, but he needed instant cash & I don't do paypal. So I call a retailer, and there are some rocks that would work, but he won't have a chance to look at them until Monday. Sigh. It always seems strange when it takes this much effort to spend this much. It'll happen. Maybe Monday will bring some joy. 'Hope all is well in God's Country Central - from G.C. West

Sheffield razors tend to really like my coticules, I don't know why but I like the results.
Coticule prices are going to go up, I think they just did recently, La Vienette is one of the most expensive layers now. Maybe try to get a La Nouvelle Veine or something less popular. They all do the same job...
