Thread: Charnley Forest vs Escher

I vote that before you spend $300+ on an Escher or a Charnley Forest, you spend $19 on a C12K. If you can't get sharp and smooth off the C12K, it's your technique and an expensive stone won't improve the edges.
But I could be wrong, I'm far from being a honemeister.

From what I've heard CF is good for stanless blades and Escher more on the Solingen blades, but that is preference from a person I talk to and may not be exact.
I don't own one but I love Eschers.

I would say that if you can't get a shaveable edge off your coticule, then purchasing an escher or CF is not going to solve your problems. Where your edge is at now, if you jump to an escher or CF it will do nothing as you first need to learn to max out the keeness from your coti, before jumping to higher finishers.
I wouldn't say that your coticule is too fast either. How does it perform on water only? Does it auto slurry and darken that as well? If so you may need to finish under running water.
But my best advice is, learn your coticule to the point you get great shaves off it, then decide if you need another finisher.

+1 on coti mastery
I'm up to my neck ATM, learning the coti. It's a neat stone, but like others, it's very different. 'Had it (them, actually) a week. One excellent edge, and one on the low side of excellent. Neither match what I can do on another stone, but that says more about my skill than the stone. The skill will come if I'm willing to do the work, ask the questions, trust the experience of others. It's a hoot. Before getting a good finish from the coti, it amazed me how fast it would take the edge from a set bevel to 8k +. Even if I used another stone for finishing, the coti is worth it for how fast it rips through what would have been a multi-stone progression. I am using a moderately fast coti (petite blanche), though. Not all are fast. You may well acquire multiple finishing stones, but that will more likely be from HAD then the shortcomings of the Coti.
