Default Help me decide where to go....

    Have...

    Chosera 1k

    Naniwa 8k

My question is...would you get Naniwa 3 k or 5 k. Going to shapton 16k after 8. I can only get one. Currently SRD is out of the 5k's.

I'm guessing the Nagura stone that comes with the 1k is to speed up the honing a little?

    rickboone,

For me, I would suggest the Naniwa 3k (I use a Naniwa 1,3 8, 12 progression and have found it works very nicely indeed).

    Have fun !

    Best regards

I have the naniwa 1, 5, 8, 12, and it seems to work just as well as my Shapton 1,4,8,16, or my Norton 1, 4, 8.

Whatever series you have, it will only work if you establish a proper bevel with the 1k before all else. After a proper bevel is set, it is just a progression of polishing steel.

If you go to the 3k 4k or 5k before the bevel is properly set on the 1k, you are essentially wasteing your time.

I've since sold my superstones but when I had them I did 1-3-5-8-12. Lynn and holli4 found 1k-5k to their liking. According to the Japanese grit chart, as opposed to the USA one.... the 3k is a higher micron (as in finer) than the number suggests. (the same goes for all of them) That is why I did 3/5 pyramids after setting the bevel. BTW, I've also went to the chosera 1k as my default bevel setter and like it very much. I haven't used the rubbing stone because it cuts plenty fast as is. Randy tried it with the rubbing stone and told me it is super fast with that. Maybe too fast depending on your hand and on what your cutting.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

i thought the rubbing stone was to clean the shrimp, but I could see using it to make a slurry too. Personally, when I want a slurry on my choseea I use a coti.

I think the ss 3 and 5 can be used interchangeably (perhaps with a slightly tweaked progression), but I prefer the 5k. That said, I've been preferring my nortons to my nanieas recently... so preferences do change.

k, so lynn (srd) is out of the 5k. would i be missing anything by getting the 3? seems not. seems 1, 3, 8 will be fine. or.. 1, 5, 8 (if 5 becomes available). is this correct?

    Correct.

With the 1,5,8...you could slurry the 5. With a nice slurry, you would drop that grit a bit....and then dilute up to the 5 before moving to the 8. I love the variables!

And I'm with Holli - if you want a slurry (and one that cuts uber fast!) on your Chosera.....break out your coti slurry stone. I've been using it consistently when I need to do lots of work on a bevel. It's fantastic.

Check out CKTG: Kitchen Knives, Chef Knives, Shun Knives, Global Knives, Wusthof Knives, Henckels Knives, Ceramic Knives They have the Naniwas too....and I think they also sell the baseless model IIRC.

I'm not sure blanket statements regarding universal Truths really help the issue. People are free to use their time as they see fit - it's their time after all. Besides that, I must have missed the "you can only set bevels on a 1K stone" memo... All those years I set them on the Norton 4K must have been some kind of illusion....

So, 5k with slurry seems an option that's good. Would that be better than 1, 3, 8? Or the same? Or just more variables?

I have never used slurry on the 3k or the 5k, so it's not required, but I'm sure you can use it if you want. The 1 3 8 12 and the 1 5 8 12 all got me to the same place, just a different route.
