Don't take this the wrong way, but up until this sentence, your post sounded like a Murray Carter advertisement. But I think this one sentence sums up the entire discussion.

I've never heard of Murray Carter until I read this thread. But I don't doubt that he makes wonderful knives that are, in fact, scary sharp. However, honing a razor is quite different than honing a knife.

I have a good friend who is quite an expert in "sharp". In fact, he makes a decent living selling a sharpening system/tool he designed. I've held hunting broadheads that he has sharpened that I have no doubt would give a close, comfortable shave. However, he won't go near a razor.

Someone who knows how to sharpen more than one kind of edged tools might make a few mistakes on his first razor, but on the second, he will give it a comfortable shaving edge. Yes, knives are different from razors, but the person who tries to sharpen them should also know that fact. You can shave with a knife's edge with 15-20 degrees angle or even more, but you wouldn't try this on a razor because razors are not made to be honed with a 20 degrees angle. I doubt anyone of you haven't try to sharpen your kitchen knives. Did you gave them a flat ground bevel-edge? (Accept from some professional knives that are made to be honed this way) The same goes for the razors. And the same goes for Mr Carter. All I see is an amateur who tries to boost his sales through youtube and doesn't know about sharpening-honing. Your forging skills might be impressive, but for honing, that's another story. And you can keep your gold medal of your sharpening olympics.

What I would suggest here is that y'all pick up your 1K and 6K stones along with your belts and a little Chromium Oxide and get to honing. Find out what will not work for YOU, what will work for YOU and what will work well for YOU. This place has never been about glorifying anyone or promoting yourself for dollars for anyone. It is about learning and helping others. How bout the internet bravado take a break and the honing or trying to hone razors commence.

    Have fun.

No. If he is of the opinion that a kitchen knife gives better shaves than a strigiht, something is wrong.

No. Lynn followed the method explained by Murray Carter, with over a dozen razors, and got consistently mediocre results.

Newest video. I'm subscribed to his channel if you can't tell. He makes awesome knives I hear. I'll take a knife, but pass on the razor honing, I think...or maybe I'm curious enough to just send him a razor and then test it. I might do that if he's willing.

If you think about the fact that he doesn't come to forums and spend hours discussing with tons of people, he's actually got some good ideas. Not saying you should do it his way, but I am saying (like in my previous posts) that the guys thinking he's an idiot should probably back off and check out their own bias and unwillingness to research in advance before making a judgment.

I'm lost. The recommendation to try the methods out and see for yourself would be enough for most people. The need to feed the BS seems more important now for some reason. I am thinking this thread is really serving no further purpose.
