I'm not so sure that killing the edge is all that important. Effectively, once you start to re-hone on the 4K, you are starting over on that edge.

    Have fun

    That make sense!!!!
I really feel like the underdog here!!!
the only thing i have going for me is 25 years or so of sharpening and honing woodworking tools,
and to be honest i dont think that helps much!!

I think any kind of sharpening experience help. The razor is just a more delicate edge with a set geometry on the bevel. Once you learn to keep the razor flat on the stone, use the right amount of pressure and get comfortable with sharpening stones that work well for you, you're there. A little bit of practice and experience goes a long long way.

Yep I see no reason why a Re-hone ie: touch-up are not allowed in fact yours will be a very interesting journey to watch since you will have some limitations put on you...

I am looking forward to Martin's journey through this too, as a new honer that will have a ton of help in this thread..

And also I will be watching Amund, as an expierienced honer, but one who has not really used a Norton before, he is going have the moves down, but is going to have to develop the touch for a new Hone

As I've posted a number of times, when I was learning to hone, Randy was helping me out, and I told him I was honing on the 4/8 and moving on to the 12k. He told me to shave test off of the 8k before moving to the 12k. No point in going to the 12k if the edge isn't shave ready at the 8k. So I did that routinely for a long time. I used to do it on all razors but as time past and I became more proficient I skip the 8k shave test most times and just go on to the Escher.

This is a dangerous program for the HADicts ..... they may find that all they ever need is the 8k and those j-nats, eschers, and other esoteric naturals will become worthless.

Anyway, I'm not in yet though I might get in. I don't want to commit to having to shave with two razors off of the 8k for a whole month. I might change up and get in before the deadline but right now I'm just a spectator. All I have to sharpen in the chosera 1k, norton 4/8 using the pyramids..... 'cause it works .... before the finishing so it ain't like this is unfamiliar to me. Anyway, glad you brought this to fruition Glen and it will be very instructive for those who participate and for the watchers too.

Another intersting aspect for me is that while I do arm hair checks off the 8K I have never actually shaved with it. I always move up in grit to the 12K. How far can I really push an 8k? My technique will really be tested.

Hmm, I'm experienced now, now that's a stretch! But I took to this fairly quickly and I have honed quite a lot for my 6 months into this I guess, but this will be a great learning experience for sure!
And that's why I ordered the Norton in the first place, and I couldn't have picked a better time for buying one

Is it possible to use just one razor? I really don't have that many to risk two, and yes, I mean risk. If so, I'll be in just to add the valueless commentary of someone who has used a hone less than 10 times.

Oh, BTW, typically I hone while also drinking German beer, so when I say I did 50 laps it was probably 5, or 500, or none, or I didn't even hone...
