Great Idea!
I’ve done this experiment in the past!
It was when I first started honing, and I’ve encouraged every ‘apprentice’ that I’ve had to do the same! I recommend that after the blade is off the stone that they strop 100 on the cloth and 200 on the leather.
As suggested do the same off of the 4K! You will be surprised!
While I typically finish off of a Naniwa 12k I could very easily live with the edge off of the Norton 8K to the end of my days! Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

My immediate thought upon reading of this challenge was that some steels would shave better off a 1k than others. Not sharper, but smoother and relatively more forgiving. Make any sense that steel differences would be more pronounced at lower grits, or am I crazy? (Don't answer that too quickly.)

I should probably do this. I've been fiddling with the idea of testing my finishers on my W&B, but I should probably make sure I get better bevels before I worry about that (even though that razor is probably the best edge I've ever done!).
Weeks of frustration ahead!

What a great idea. I should do this too. Except that I do not have a 1K. Not to go off topic, but you should be able to set a bevel on a 4K, right?

When I started all I had was the Norton 4K/8K and I set a whole lot of bevels on the 4K before I finally got a 1K and it certainly can be done. The 1K makes it faster but in many respects the 4K is safer.
As far as shaving off the 1K, that I never tried. I've tried off the 4K with good results but as far as the 1K goes I'm sure it will shave but not on my Broadway face.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I will throw my hat in. 1k Norton, unpasted jeans or heavy fabric, and leather. One question on testing, should the bevel set on 1k be able to pop hair above the skin?

Thanked: 247Second iteration didn't go as well as the first. This time I scaled my stropping by epd's standard. I didn't finish the shave. It was cutting the hairs, but it was a little below minimum comfort level for me. I'll rehone again tonight, strop to the standards for the thread, and give it another go tomorrow.
I think raising the lap count on denim would have allowed a decent shave, but I've got two more "within the regs." shaves to complete before I can head in that direction.
Twisted Oak: I believe your best result will come if you are able to cut hairs well above skin level before stropping. But this has a YMMV component, which effectively makes the previous statement about as useless as a busted lightbulb.
