Thanked: 28"secret" honing method
Lol, I just asked a seller on ebay what honing progression he uses, I just wanted him to display proper knowledge of hones to verify that the razor is "Shave ready" as advertised since I hear alot of them are advertised as shave ready but really aren't
but when he replied he told me "sorry it's a secret" lol I wasn't expecting that. Does anyone else keep their honing methods a secret? Or is the seller just trying to hide his lack of knowledge? I searched the sellers name in srp and it seems people from here have bought razors from him before that were shave ready, so now i really am curious, does he have some honing method that is so good that he can't share the secret with anyone?
maybe someone can enlighten me on this subject.

I doubt the guys methods are anything special. Maybe he's doing nothing.
I think when you buy on e-bay you just have to plan on honing the razor when you get it.
IMO, the reputable honing guys are very public about how they do things.

Thanked: 2591I always tell people what I use when they ask me. I use Jnats which are fairly unique by properties from stone to stone, so I might as well say my methods are secret as they are not reproducible by anyone. The edges are shave ready for sure though.

Thanked: 247I might suggest that he/she is outsourcing that part of the job and does not want to share that fact?
Keeping honing practices secret is beyond silly. Guys that use the basic norton 4/8 should be proud of their results with such meager (but functional) equipment, guys using more exotic naturals are generally quite proud to talk about what they use. It does not add up that he/she would claim secrecy unless the job is outsourced...and outsourcing is not at all a bad thing!
As others have said, I expect to have to hone EVERYTHING I buy...even customs and semi-customs. I am happy to report that to date all the custom and semi-customs I have bought were truly shave ready though

Was the honing method described as "True Honing™" by any chance?

I would check his feedback. If he is getting good feedback his claim of 'shave ready' must be valid. If you want to know how to hone SRP has the knowledge base here for you. Get one of his razors and use it as a benchmark to improve your own honing. OTOH, maybe you're a better honer than he is.

All the info you will ever need to be a great honer is on this site. The only secret is the art and experience which just comes with practice and time.

Why say it's secret? Why would you hide it? If he say's it's a secret, he's probably using pastes. Lynn and Glen publically post videos of themselves honing.
The magic is in the method, not the stones.
If people ask me, I tell them what I used.Last edited by zib; 12-25-2012 at 06:56 PM.

I am wholeheartedly with Zib on this, there is no secret other than skill and experience, the guy could have told what stones he used....if any.
