Razors with excessive hone wear may require more than one layer of tape. Great tips guys.

So when do you hone ?
One of the pleasures of honing for yourself, and not for hire, is honing when you are in the mood. If I am not in the mood I don't go near the hones. I also know when to walk away. If the razor is frustrating me I will save it for another day, maybe even another month. No deadlines pressing me.

Thanked: 1936-Find a honing mentor if at all possible to show you the ropes & help you build a solid foundation. A few hours with a honing veteran will surely help to shorten your learning process.
-Have a reference razor.

I like that idea alot. As someone like me who's hit the honing roadblock it really would help if I wrote down all the steps I've taken just in case I do crack the nut. Then I will have at least a foundation to start off on my next razor, or if I haven't succeeded,I'll know what to try differently next time.

Thanked: 67For anyone with a Windows PC with a MySQL database, there's an app to keep records of honing and shaving which I wrote. It allows you to see the last time a razor was honed, what the next shave(s) were like, complete honing history, all shaves with a particular razor, stuff like that. It's free, and you can download it here.
I'm working on a version 2.0, which will have a nicer interface and more features, but it will be compatible with a database set up with version 1.
