Thanked: 13249You ended up at 12k with a chipped and wire edge, Yes I read yer thread...
Going higher then the Naniwa 12k will probably not get you anything especially if you harshed it
Going a different direction from the 8k might get you a different feel
SR's only get so sharp, Period... going higher in grit can't get them sharperLast edited by gssixgun; 04-17-2013 at 03:21 AM.

Thanked: 1263For quite some time 8k was and still is an acceptable shaving edge...that should answer your question. The rest IMO is to see what we can achieve towards the ultimate sharpness and comfort. You can go as high as 30k or further, doesn't mean it's gonna be the edge for you.

Thanked: 2591Ok then some mentor gangin' if you do not like the mod gang
Smooth is more important than super sharp. You can't get smooth @4k , it will not be comfortable shave, the edge is also not sharp at all by shaving standards. You will start to get smooth @8k with some paste action added, at that level you will start to get close to good sharpness.
At 12k you are there as far as sharpness to aim for and the smoothness is a matter of preference what hone you like best.
After that it is a bit of a spoil fest I guess, you can go on synthetics 16k, 20k, or 30k, or you can go on naturals, personal preference for sure.
Super sharp edges can be something that works or something that breaks the deal, sometimes super sharp = harsh feeling, also a bunch of cuts as the edge likes to easy bite into the skin.Stefan

Thanked: 1587I stopped at a $1000 hone, thereabouts. Each time I use it I estimate I use something like 0.001% of the hone (maybe 0.0011% if I use slurry). So that's about 1000 * 0.0001 = 1 cent.
I shave off a 1 cent edge.
In all seriousness though, it really isn't as simple as "highest grit". It also has to do with pressure, and what happens on the hones of lower grit leading up to that final grit, and the razor itself. Sure, when things settle down and you become a consistent honer, then the final finisher may make a difference. But until that time there's probably more variation in your day to day honing than there is between your hones.
As has been said before, you can have the highest grit hone available unto man, but unless you have it right at the beginning (bevel), all you have is a really nicely polished bevel on each side. If those sides don't meet at a fine enough point, even a $20,000 super duper Jnat won't help you. This is known as the "polished turd effect" in the scientific literature.

Thanked: 1263You're missing the point I believe...like anything else with this sport, there is no definitive answer...it boils down to whatever works for you. For some 8k is enough, others want to push it further...but it boils down to skill level. So to give you an answer you're looking for, for me I'm happy with 15k. But next you can ask about naturals where grit can be truly undetermined...so again, where does it end?
