Thread: Verifiable progression that works

I am constantly tinkering with hone progression and have recently found what I consider a good one. Please try it if you have the stones. Bring a razor to shave ready on an 8k stone. Then do 10 laps on a 12k Naniwa. Then 30 w/slurry on a Thuringian. Then 30 more on Thuringian under a running faucet. Then 30 to 40 plain water on a Gokumyo 20,000 grit stone. Strop and shave. Awesome and deadly sharp...........................Jerry

If it works for you it works.

Seems to me that the Thuri is not needed. You should be able to jump from a 12K Nani to the 20K stone without a bridge.

you can jump on the Gokumyo right after 10k Naniwa Super Stone and it works like a charm.
The Suehiro is very capable of taking on a 10k Edge and making it exceptional.

That 20k is brilliant in that, actually cutting while polishing to a sublime level

Then it's settled. The Thuri is for sale! Ha!

I also have a Chosera 10k. I will try the jump from that stone directly to the 20k.

Thanks for the advice. It seems that I occasionally do more than is necessary.

The Chosera 10K-Gokumyo 20K is my preferred final progression.

On the point about the Thuri as an intermediary between the 10 and 20K stones, I can see the rationale of just skipping to the 20K. But sometimes, IMO, an intermediate stone does more than just bridge a gap in grits - it can sometimes be about how they cut as well. I know, for example, that I could jump from my 8K to (one of my) Jnats without too much trouble, but that if I use my Escher in between I seem to get a nicer edge off the Jnat once I arrive there.

It could just be my OCD, but I really do think the intermediate work on the Escher imparts scratches that interact more favourably with the action of the Jnat. The Gokumyo sounds like an entirely different beast of course, so I could just be waffling on about things I don't know about.

In any event I've never tried honing under running water - I think I'll try that. And I would personally be really interested in any results you get from experimenting with edges produced using both progressions: straight to the 20K versus a Thuri intermediary.

Is it possible that your wallet screams simply because you are sitting on it?!?!!
I stopped carrying a wallet years ago. It remains empty because of all the razors, hones and strops I bought.

Gokumyos are reasonably priced and should be tried by all capable honers. Just do it.....
