    Hmmmm...
I'm not sure they are at all special really, just a small part of japanese culture that has not gained international popularity. The French have Opinels and Douk-Douk's, the Germans have the Mercator and the japanese have the Higonokami. I'm sure there are many others.

    All great cheap pocket knives.

Makes perfect sense ..... a person carrying a locking blade might go completely crazy and start cutting throats ..... no danger of that if the blade doesn't lock. Glad someone has the foresight to pass such legislation.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I think it's more to do with the fact locking knives are more useful if you were going to start cutting throats.

It's not just us though, similar laws are being passed in the states as well. In fact, some of yours are even more restrictive than ours now.

We can still own some brilliant knives and I would love to see more people carrying them. Just simple single blade slipjoints. £10 and it would serve them for a life time.

Yeah, and a non locking blade is much safer for the user.
