As a former Marine and former Soldier with a combined total of 21+ years active service I often found myself in the situation your quote best describes. BTW, I love the quote and hope you don't mind if I use it from time to time.
I bought my first KA-BAR back in the very early 80s, why do we only remember the 1st of anything? Anyway, I have since owned and destroyed several KA-BARs simply by abusing them. In their defense I will say, as I often did, if I can't cut someone with it I can damn sure beat him to death. I tried carrying a hunting knife and an Air Force survival knife at different times but always found myself going back to the KA-BAR. To me it just feels right for a field knife. On the down side, I could never keep an edge on any of them. It could have been as simple as trying to put too fine an adge on a field knife or lack of proficiency, regardless the reason I was always tuning it up.
To keep my load light while humping the streets of Mosul I carried a Gerber "EOD" multi-tool, the issued Benchmade auto-opener, and my trusty KA-BAR as the only edged tools/weapons. I was not issued a bayonet, just to answer your question before you ask.
To this day, those would be the 1st 3 things I would pack if I were called out of retirement.

Ah, but you're not a Chef are you mate?! And I heard your Chefs had to round off any sharp points and corners just in case they may go on a stabbing spree (Not really of course, but I don't reckon that would be too far off in the UK).
