1.top one is my plumb boy scout. Rehung it myself, made it longer than my other one.
2.Next is my hf elcheapo Filed the edge down until parts of it had an aluminum foil edge. lol fun learning tool
3.this is my newest. A cold steel trail hawk. Got a few mods to do to it then I will be trying it out.
4.this is my wetterlings. Love this one.
these are all new (except the plumb) and never used yet. I'm getting a rotation to find out which I like the best as a camping / backpacking/ hunting basecamp type deal

I have heard very good things about Wetterlings in the past but that cold steel trail hawk looks really nice, light and functional.

Also, great pics Cangooner, would love to get into smithing, blades in particular, but i doubt my neighbors would appreciate a noisy forge.

Thanks. If you keep your steel hot and deaden the ring in the anvil, the noise isn't *too* bad, depending on what you're making. Some processes are quite quiet, while others that involve full swings with a sledge hammer are of course a bit shouty. The big neighbourly concession I made was only using a propane forge at home (those pics were from a class I did at Adirondack Folk School) as I figured most wouldn't appreciate coal smoke.

Out of curiosity, are the coal mines around Sunderland/Tyneside in operation these days? Most of my knowledge of that industry is from 600+ years ago.

When you start using the Wetterlings you will fall in love with it. You can do it all with the size you have, from falling small trees to skinning deer (yes, I tried it last deer season). I have found that a good axe is a most valuable tool when in the woods. I took a file to the top of mine to get a nice squared point for firestarter rods too!

Some were still visible around 20 years ago in that you could see the old shaft elevators but i dont remember seeing one in quite some time, i actually live about 5 minutes walk from a huge old slag heap i remember from when i was younger, its now a park.
Most, if not all the mines got shut down in the mid 80's by Thatcher at the cost of something like 20,000 miners jobs i know she did some good for my country too, but its really understandable why so many hated her with pure venom. Some of the guys i have know over the years that worked the pits really loved their jobs back then.

This is my first restoration. I was told it was a pre 1949 True Temper, but I am not sure. There are no markings except for the hash marks stamped in the cheek. Tried to get a close up of them in the first pic. Anybody know what those mean? What I do know is it belonged to my Great Grandpa. I have not used it since the resto, but I am camping this weekend, so hope I get to use it.
