Depending what I have done with it, usually every couple weeks or so. Regular use of a steel helps a lot
I do admit that, I too sharpen my utility knives and the two single edge razor blades I keep on my bench.
Now that I think about it those two single edge blades, have been in their plastic holders, for years.
I strop them on a 1k diamond file and a ”tool” leather paddle with chrome oxide.
For a working edge, a 1k edge and Chrome Oxide is plenty good.
I bought the "Dunn Knife Sharpening system" ....with a little practice....can shave arm hair with any knife in mere minutes
Worksharp, Ken Onion edition.
Don't know if "The Wicked Edge System " has been mentioned yet...a little pricey
I use a pair of MDF wheels mounted on a bench buffer. One is impregnated with grit. This is the one I use for metal removal...only takes 1 or 2 passes per side. The other is pasted with a polishing rouge. Just like a finishing stone, it is used to polish the beveled edge. For touchups I use a 1'' by 30'' leather belt mounted on a sanding machine.
For years, I used stones. Even in skilled hands, this is a timely process. Using the buffer, it takes about 90 seconds to turn a dull knife into a razor sharp one. And less metal gets taken off than if done by hand(at least my hands).
